About this place

Japantown Peace Plaza is the cultural heart of San Francisco’s Japantown, linking the Japan Center buildings and centering the neighborhood’s Peace Pagoda.

History

The plaza and pagoda were created during the 1960s redevelopment of the Western Addition. The pagoda, inspired by historic Japanese forms, was a gift from Osaka and was dedicated in 1968 as a symbol of peace and friendship.
