Geneva Carbarn and Powerhouse is a preserved former street railway complex near Balboa Park, now adapted as a community arts and cultural space.

Highlights

  • Electric railway landmarkThe surviving powerhouse and office building preserve the architectural legacy of the city’s early electric streetcar network.

History

Designed by the Reid Brothers, the complex is one of the last physical reminders of San Francisco’s first electric railway system. After earthquake damage in 1989 and a proposed demolition, community advocacy led to preservation, transfer to Recreation and Parks, and listing on the National Register in 2010.
