About this place

Camp Mather is a San Francisco Recreation and Parks family camp in the High Sierra near Hetch Hetchy and Yosemite National Park, centered on rustic cabins, tent sites, Birch Lake, and shared recreation spaces.

Setting
High Sierra near Hetch Hetchy and Yosemite National Park

Highlights

  • Birch LakeThe camp’s swimming lake began as a mill pond used to float logs for the Hetch Hetchy dam project.
  • Jack Spring Dining HallA building created when the Yosemite Park and Curry Company housed tourists at the site remains the camp’s kitchen and dining hall.

History

The area was used by Miwok people before the dam-building era. In the early twentieth century, a sawmill and worker settlement supported construction of O’Shaughnessy Dam; after the dam was completed, San Francisco designated the property for family recreation in the mid-1920s and named it for Stephen T. Mather, the first director of the National Park Service.
