History

Bernal Hill formed part of a large land grant awarded to José Cornelio de Bernal, a member of Juan Bautista de Anza's 1776 expedition. The surrounding neighborhood developed in the mid-1800s, while the hill continued to support ranching and later became the site of San Francisco's first authorized grassland habitat-restoration project.
