Highlights

  • Diverse natural habitatGrassland, scrub, woodland, and the city’s largest population of Islais cherry support a wide range of plants and wildlife.
  • Historic park roadA paved road loops through the park past remnants of Depression-era Works Progress Administration stairs and retaining walls.

History

After a proposed residential development was abandoned, the Bay View Land Company sold much of the hill’s crest to San Francisco in 1902. Charles Crocker contributed another portion on the condition that an isolation hospital not be built there, and the hilltop became a park; an additional 16 acres on the upper northeast slope were acquired in 1997.
